Western Red Cedar and its value for greenhouses
 |
Western Red Cedar (written by some as Western Redcedar) is botanically Thuja plicata. It is a remarkably rot-resistant timber and possesses aromatic oils which are the timbers own natural preservative. This makes it resistant to the effects of damp and it will resist decay for many years, as well as the attack of insects and fungi. Painting and any form of preservative treatment is not necessary. It is also strong and remarkably durable, added to this is its light weight but close grain with a low tendency to warp or twist. This combination of features make it the very best timber for greenhouses.
Western Red Cedar has low coefficient of expansion and contraction which add to its stability. Timber is a poor conductor of heat so a Western Red Cedar greenhouse will keep your plants snug in winter and help to keep the heat out in summer. The quality of the construction also ensures a draft free environment for your plants.
We take care to be sure that all our timber has come from forests that are managed in a renewable manner from sustainable forests. The timber is certified by the Canadian Standards Authority (CSA) and also under the Forest Stewardship Scheme (FSC). All C.H. Whitehouse Ltd buildings are constructed of FSC certified Western Red Cedar specially imported from the Pacific coast of Canada from a small number of mills.
In some areas of these forests the tree achieves a height of over 150ft and when it grows in dense stands it produces excellent straight grained timber. It is this straight grained timber that we purchase. This is then imported for us, seasoned in our yard, machined and then crafted into your greenhouse.
To look after this special timber all that it needs is an occasional wash, if this is followed with a coating of special mineral oil the timber will maintain is natural colour for longer. Left in its natural state it will weather to a pleasant silver-grey colour as it forms a tough coating on its surface.
