The growing space inside a greenhouse can be on the floor, on benches round the sides, in the greenhouse this is called "staging" from the display or staging of plants by the Victorian Head gardener for his employer to admire. We make Western Red Cedar slatted staging to fit all of our greenhouses. The staging is slatted to allow air to circulate round the plants. Staging can rest on the sides of the greenhouse or as freestanding "tables" which are sometimes made stepped to show plants at their best. The greenhouses specified in our price list all include staging within the quoted price. If you require a greenhouse without staging then please ask for a quote.
In specialist greenhouses the staging may also need to be more special. Orchids do better with a free flow of air round each specimen. This can be achieved by making staging with narrow slats and narrow space. To increase the humidity for some Orchids under staging is also used. Alpines need to be kept cool at their roots and their staging need to enable the pots or pans to be covered in cold wet gravel. This is heavy and is incorporated in the design of the Alpine House. You can make a small part of a bench into a plunge bed. This is fine for Alpines but if it is heated it is then used as a propagating area.
At some times in the year the greenhouse is full. Every bit of space is in use. Upper shelves can increase this space. We make shelves 9" (60cm) wide to take a seed tray and these can be fitted on the sides of the greenhouse under the eaves or across the ends. In large greenhouse shelves can also be hung on rafters using special brackets. Make use the rafter is strong enough for the weight that is on the shelf.
